There are strategic city hubs that are great getaways to allow you to tailor make your vacation in an easier way as they have more connections to other centers. 

It can be a city break twinned with a week on the beach in Asia, island hopping in the Caribbean, a stopover in Dubai en route to the Maldives, a safari in South Africa with an extension in the Mauritius or combo in Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo,  there are plenty of options.
